work in progress - cover page and contents page

in lesson i changed the colour of her top from stripes to plain black as it was very disturbing and looked unappealing with the coverline. i changed the masthead from black to red to match the main coverline. the contents page is not yet done but its getting there.

work-in-progress cover page

today, i fixed the mast head and fixed any blemishes on the image. i put the main coverline with the colour that works well with my colour scheme. next i will be adding a puff and more coverlines that are based on the music magazine itself and the barcode and issue date.

photography session

in today's session went to the photography room to learn the whereabouts of the room. we learnt how to use the lights and the basics on the camera.the lights that are used in the photography room are are the studio flash kit. this room can be used for only 20 minutes so the people in that time should be well prepared to avoid any disappointments. before using the cameras you should o the following checks:

  • F stop
  • Shutter speed
  • white balance
  • dial with modes; (N) - manual
the f stop and the shutter speed correct the exposure 100-150-200 the higher the brighter. when taking the picture stay 5 to 6ft away from the backdrop to make the pictures look more appealing plus its avoids the model from bleaching into the background. the flash on the studio flash kits have numbers 1-6 with 1 being the lowest and 6 being the highest intensity of light flashing when you take a picture. in the studio there are 5 lights in general. soft boxes give a more natural effect on the lighting.hydration ratio of 2:1. 3 point lighting consist of the hair line light, fill light and softbox.

work in progress: inital ideas for my magazine

today we planned our music magazines and this includes choosing the genre and the target audience. the audience had to be chosen properly by considering the age difference and the title had to be chosen. this was done by looking through similar words used in that genre.

PRELIMINARY TASK: Evaluation

Evaluation

Front cover:

What went well was that the layout and image fits in great for a college magazine and the yellow puff added a pop of colour. The colour scheme is really professional and compliments the picture very well also, the choice of the image and colour scheme is good which fits as college magazine. However, the improvements that could be made are to make the skyline and ‘star pupils’ more visible as it is hard to read. This could be fixed by changing the colour and making the size of the font bigger. Colour scheme isn’t noticeable to some and text isn’t noticeable because of where it has been placed and this could change by adding a shadow on Photoshop or put an outline on the cover lines and for the colour scheme I could use a colour that’s already on the image so it’s more noticeable. Another improvement that needs to be made is that the cover page is clustered and visually busy and this may be unappealing to some consumers this could be fixed by taking some cover lines off or space them out evenly. Due to no colour scheme the puff seems to be out of place visually- to avoid this I could use a colour of the text of the colour lines for the puff.

Contents page:

What went well was that the design on the background and the sharp edges created a professional look. Page allowed the text and images to stand out and relevant images were added to the magazine. Contents page is simple and links to the front cover. What I need I improve is that the contents page looks empty and it’s missing some. I could add a paragraph from the publisher of the magazine so the audience get a rough idea on what is inside the magazine. Also, I could add numbers on the images and subheading’s to make it look less dull.

PRELIMINARY TASK: Work-in-progress: college magazine

during today's lesson I worked on my contents page. I started off on photoshop then transferred it onto inDesign. i did the background, the triangles on the sides to make it look appealing and the title which is 'contents page' and i added the page numbers. I still need to add the pictures on the contents page which I took during the previous lesson.

1. Analysis of article 2- Mixmag

Analysis of article 2- Mixmag

Front cover of this article is a mid-shot type with the model looking directly at the camera covering the center of his face with his hands. The lighting is shot from the left side enhancing a shadow of the right side of his face which creates an effect.

Convention of page layout: the masthead runs across the top of the front cover rather than the left hand side. There's two font choices which are consistent and work nicely with each other as there's a set font for the main point and another font for the branched points. The cover lines are shown on both left and right side but mainly on the right with this magazine cover.with this cover there's a skyline which tends to be right at the top of the front cover which normally says what the magazine is. However, not all magazine covers have this such as XXL. The text boxes are put into columns so that they are easy to read and easy to navigate around. The language used is in second person. Most double page spreads are either Q&A’s or written in 1st or 2nd person. This could be directed at people who are interested in rappers. The genre is DJ and is aimed at young clubbers who are aware of the latest songs. By looking at the audience the publisher can decide on what adverts to put up which then makes it more convenient for the audience as it will be under their interests.

the contents page for this magazine is a double page spread which has three images reflecting on who the magazine is aimed at and where the music comes from. the page numbers are out into columns on the left and right with the main pages in a bigger size.

1. Analysis of article 1- XXL

Analysis of article 1- XXL

Front cover: The shot types of this article is full lengths shot with most of the models mid shot and are all in different postures which gives us a clear understanding that they are expressing themselves. The framing of this front cover is that the models are framed in one place with some sitting and some standing in different levels. The lighting is centered with no shadow. The costumes used in this cover are casual clothing which indicates that they are comfortable and laid back.

Convention of page layout: mast head on the top left hand side which traditionally belongs there. The font choices are consistent this is important as it will avoid tackiness and will make it look appealing to the audience. There are some teasers of on the sides of the magazine which are only names. There’s a cover line on the bottom of the page to which gives an understanding on what the magazine is featuring. The text boxes are aligned and are in columns.  The language used is in second person which means that someone else is talking about them and their achievements. The genre of this magazine is American hip hop the stars are well known by the younger generation. These stars are mainly from America which is why most specialise in this genre. Most of the stars have a similar costume this could connote that they do a similar type of music.  The publisher of XXL is Bill williams and the editor in chief is Vanessa Satten. by the looks of it, the audience for this magazine is probably early 20's that are employed because there's lots of advertisements on headphones and trainers. however most teens would read this magazine too as it has most of the well known artists.

The contents page normally has the page numbers to the relevant pages. this directs you to where and what you should be looking at instead of looking through all the pages. the page numbers stay on the left hand side with a heading and there will normally be a picture on the right side.

Practice cover

Today in class we attempting a cover for a music magazine. we used Photoshop to add the layers in, these layers consist  of a Masthead, a main cover line, bar-code and we had to manipulate the masthead by erasing parts of the font. I have experience with Photoshop therefore this lesson on designing a front cover was a recap. the main focus of my front cover is the weeknd so it was a struggle to erase some of my masthead due to his hair but i managed to make it look presentable even though its incomplete.

differences and similarities of music magazines and college magazines

  • A college magazine and a music magazines have many differences as well as similarities. The main difference is that the model used for the college magazine is smiling whereas in a music the model wouldn't show any emotion and would be still. another difference is that in a college magazine they talk about college life however, in a music magazine its more on music and advertising products that relate to music.
  • a similarity is that both the magazines have a masthead, a puff, cover lines and a skyline
